WASHINGTON (CAP) - White House officials confirm that when Vice President Dick Cheney's plane left Turkey following an extended visit to the Mideast earlier this week, the vice president himself was not on the plane. According to published reports, Cheney was inadvertently left behind and will have to catch a later flight.
"Near as we can tell, the vice president's presence on Airforce II was simply overlooked in all the hustle and bustle of preparing the flight for take-off," said Cheney's spokeswoman Megan Mitchell. "We were well over the Atlantic before we realized he wasn't with us."
According to pilot Martin Forense, there was some concern that the jet might not have enough fuel for a return trip to Turkey to retrieve the vice president. After an inspiring talk by Cheney's wife Lynne, Forense said the group on the plane collectively decided to keep their westerly heading.
"If Dick were here, he'd want us to keep going," Forense recalled Lynne Cheney saying as they flew 30-thousand feet above the Atlantic Ocean. However, Forense said the nail in the coffin was "the far-away look" on Cheney's face as she talked about how much she missed her grandchildren.
Meanwhile, back in Ankara, Turkey, reporters preparing for their next assignment scrambled for their cameras and recorders as a stupefied Dick Cheney strolled out of his room, clad in camouflage lounge pants, a white v-neck t-shirt, and a bathrobe. While eating a breakfast of egg, sausages and bacon with local officials later, Cheney told reporters that no one had told him the plane was getting ready to leave.
"Nobody came running in to wake me up," he said as he dabbed some egg yolk dripping down his chin.
Unfortunately for Cheney, all international flights out of Ankara were booked solid, but he was able to get a seat on an airport bus over to Ataturk International Airport. Following a two-hour layover there, his itinerary called for a flight over to Damascus International in Syria, and then he planned to go standby for the first available flight to America.
Lacking anything better to do while waiting for his flight to Ataturk, Cheney spent the rest of the morning playing cards with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, an avid Maca kizi player.
