DiCaprio Vies For Next Epic Shipwreck FlickHOLLYWOOD (CAP) - Out of tragedy, tickets.
Bubbles were still rising from the Friday wreck of the Egyptian ferry Boccaccio 98 when rumors started swirling that Mel Gibson was looking to lock down the rights to the tragedy. Gibson is reportedly seeking to film an operatic allegory of the Bible’s Exodus chapter, complete with ancient dialogue and more modern Titanic overtones.
The rumor was enough for Leonardo DiCaprio.
Neighbors of the actor have told CAP news that the Titanic actor has constructed a giant pyramid outside his West Hollywood mansion and has been seen posing in front of it dressed in ancient Egyptian clothing.
"At first we though he was trying for the lead in a 'Close Encounters' remake," said a neighbor who asked not to be identified. "Then the big mound of mud became a pyramid, and we were thinking 'Ben Hur.' Then he started yelling 'I'm Pharaoh of the world!' at all hours, and we started leaning towards some form of Titanic/ancient Egyptian crossover film."
While DiCaprio has done well the past few years, he has not come close to the superstar status he enjoyed after 1997's Titanic release, and insiders speculate he may be trying to return to that level by landing this latest doomed-ship movie.
DiCaprio has reportedly started proudly displaying his Boy Scout boating merit badge sewn into every Egyptian garment he wears, and has also begun taking lessons in ancient Egyptian.
Mel Gibson's camp, citing the Lord's will, had no comment.
